Last August, I embarked on a Paadayaatre, walking from Bangalore to Tirupati, covering approximately 240 kilometers with a group of 9 individuals. The daily walking distance ranged from 25 to 40 kilometers. As a first-time participant, my curiosity was noticeable. Despite having prepared based on tips from fellow experienced participants, I devised my own strategies that most of the scenarios never worked, on the ground. I was forced to adapt and create new strategies as and when required during the journey.

Beginning as a team of 9, our group expanded as individuals from various parts of Bangalore joined us, each moving at their own pace. The diversity was striking, encompassing men and women from 5 to 75+ years old, with some covering over 35 kilometers daily. Remarkably, many were annual participants, and some even walked barefoot—a testament to their unwavering commitment.
Throughout the journey, villages and temples played host to caretakers attending to our needs, offering food, juices, fruits, and water, all in the pursuit of collecting Punya (good karma) and some of them massaging our painful legs and feet with oils and gel. This environment transcended societal distinctions, highlighting a collective devotion to a higher purpose.

Despite swollen legs among several participants, including myself, we continued, motivating each other and chanting devotional songs (bhajane) at every step. The week-long experience imparted invaluable life lessons, applicable to our corporate environment too.

There were few key personal takeaways:

  1. Adaptability and Innovation: Despite meticulous preparation, sometimes circumstances demand swift adjustments. Learning to adapt and innovate on the go is crucial not just in pilgrimages but also in life and professional endeavors.
  2. Resilience and Perseverance: The journey showcased the power of perseverance in the face of physical discomfort and unexpected challenges. It’s a reminder that resilience and determination can help us overcome obstacles and achieve our goals.
  3. Unity in Diversity: Witnessing people from diverse backgrounds coming together for a common purpose highlights the strength of unity in diversity. Embracing differences and working together towards a shared goal can lead to remarkable achievements.
  4. Gratitude and Generosity: The kindness shown by caretakers along the journey underscores the importance of gratitude and generosity. Recognizing and appreciating the support of others, while also extending kindness whenever possible, enriches our lives and communities.
  5. Spiritual Fulfillment: Chanting devotional songs and experiencing the collective devotion of fellow travelers provided a sense of spiritual fulfillment. It’s a reminder of the importance of nurturing our spiritual well-being alongside our physical and mental health.
  6. Continuous Learning: Every step of the journey offered valuable lessons, reinforcing the idea that learning is a lifelong journey. Remaining open to new experiences and insights allows us to grow and evolve as individuals.
  7. Goal Setting and Commitment: Setting a goal and staying committed to it, despite challenges and setbacks, ultimately leads to success. The journey exemplifies the importance of determination and dedication in achieving our aspirations.
